WhatsApp continues to attract the attention of fraudsters with its millions of users. Finally, a fraud method seen in Europe targets users’ family members. Messages sent as “Hello Mom/Dad” on WhatsApp are trying to trick users.
“Hello mom/father” scam on WhatsApp
The scam, which is spreading very fast among users in Portugal, targets elderly people through WhatsApp messages. The scammers create a profile as the child of the person to be tricked and impersonate their children by writing “Hello mom/dad”.
After this message, they state that they urgently need money. Police said that the fraudsters have captured thousands of SIM cards and are trying to steal on these numbers. It has not been seen in our country yet, but it is possible to say that it has spread in Europe.
Warning users against the fraud method, police teams stated that especially elderly users should be careful. It recommends double-checking messages from unknown numbers.
On the other hand, WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to translate directly in the chat window. This feature will allow users to translate messages without using an external app, making communication more fluid.
The new feature will require users to download various language packs for on-device processing. This way, translations will happen seamlessly within the chat. This will improve the user experience by eliminating the hassle of copying and pasting messages. WhatsApp’s move will be a huge advantage for users around the world who communicate in different languages.
